Today, I, NGUYEN AN DI, am officially launching a series of shares on the GOLDEN RULES OF INTERNATIONAL PHOTO COMPETITIONS, based on my practical experience as a judge. In each installment, we will focus on one small but decisive tip.
GOLDEN RULE #1: THE UNWRITTEN RULE FOR TRAVEL PHOTO SECTION
The Rule: When submitting images to the Travel (Photo Travel) section, contestants must strictly avoid sending Portrait photos where the background is so vague that the viewer cannot distinguish the location or its geographical context.
Judge’s Rationale:
The core objective of a Travel photo is to tell a story about a Location or a unique cultural activity linked to that specific place.
- Studio vs. Location: If you submit a portrait of a beautiful girl in front of a simple brick wall, that image might qualify for the Portrait or Open sections, but it is not Travel.
- The “Sense of Place” is Key: For an image to be considered Travel, the viewer must immediately recognize or at least sense where you are. This could be a famous market corner, a unique architectural detail, or a traditional activity intrinsically tied to that specific region.
- The Litmus Test: Ask yourself: “If I remove the human subject, does the image still convey a Travel message?” If the answer is NO, you should select a different section for your submission.
